Whirly Gigs

Whirly Gigs (Family Gyrinidae), a curious little beetle, are often found scooting about on the surface of the calm waters of streams and ponds. They tend to cluster in well orchestrated groups, darting and spinning among themselves. When startled, they either dive underwater of swim frantically to avoid predation. These beetles are about 10mm in size and can travel a distance of 1 meter in one second, when necessary.
