Scalopus aquaticus, eastern mole
As its name implies, this mole lives in or nearby aquatic habitats. They live where soil moisture is relatively constant. They do not swim but use their large broad feet to dig expansive tunnels. Moist soil holds its shape when tunnels are dug through it; and thus aids in preventing tunnel collapse. Their diet consists mainly of earthworms and insects but they will occasionally eat some plant material. Due to the subterranean habit of the eastern mole, predation by hawks is slight. Flooding of the burrow system may be the largest control on the population.
