Nebraska...Our Towns

The name "Monowi," taken from the Indian language, was chosen by the Pioneer Townsite Company for the station located just a mile inside the Boyd County line. As the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad extended westward along the Ponca River in 1902, they both by-passed and created towns. Monowi's peak population of 123 came in the 1930s. Currently one of Nebraska's smallest incorporated towns, with just 13 residents. Although small, their citizens are "protectively proud" of their community. [Nebraska State Historical Society]
