First settled in the 1860s by people from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois, Swedish emigrants arrived in the 1870s and established a community known as "Stockholm." When the B&MR Railroad came through, it located the town of Shickley farther east. Robert Campbell, whose homestead was "in the right place," made a deal with the railroad and set up a land office.
